About TownBell
Last updated: 2026-07-10
TownBell is a free analysis tool for Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition. You upload a replay, and it computes over 200 insights about how the game was actually played; from build order efficiency and economy continuity to map control, fight tempo and decision quality.
Why it exists
The score screen tells you who won. Watching a replay back tells you what happened, if you have twenty spare minutes and know what to look for. TownBell sits in between: it reads the full command stream of a replay; every order, queue, research, camera movement; and turns it into a report you can read in two minutes.
The bar we hold ourselves to is that a strong player, a coach, or a caster should find things here they can't get anywhere else: not counts, but answers. Not 'you made 46 villagers' but 'your Feudal click was 12 seconds later than your own production justified'.
Every number is computed
Everything in a TownBell report is derived from the uploaded file. Replays don't store resource counts, kills, or unit positions over time; they are command recordings, not statistics dumps; so we don't show those things. When a metric can't be computed for a given game, the report says 'n/a' and explains why. We think an honest gap beats a confident guess.
Fan-made, unaffiliated
TownBell is an independent, fan-made project. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by Microsoft, Xbox Game Studios, or World's Edge. Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition is a trademark of the Microsoft group of companies. The replay parser builds on the open-source aoc-mgz project (MIT license); our thanks to its maintainers and the wider AoE2 tooling community.
